JAPANESE EMBROIDERY WORKSHOP: INTRO TO SASHIKO STITCHING

JAPANESE EMBROIDERY WORKSHOP: INTRO TO SASHIKO STITCHING

Use running stitches to create accents and all over design to embellish your clothing and textile projects.

Sashiko, meaning Little Pokes, Little Stabs or Small Piercing, is a form of functional embroidery that can both decorate and strengthen textiles. This style originated in Japan, and is an evolution of the 18 century sewing style invented by farmers and the working class, called Boro, which has gained popularity in recent years in the West. We will talk about the difference of cultural appropriation and appreciation, drawing our inspiration from this heritage technique and meditative task. This workshop is taught by Japanese American artist, River Takada, who grew up splitting time between Carrboro and Tokyo.

Max Capacity: 15 people

All ages and levels welcome. No sewing experience is necessary.

Materials: Students are encouraged to bring something to sew on and embellish. Templates, Rulers and drawing utensils (fabric chalk pencils) will be provided for the group to share with a supply kit available - 1 Sewing needle, Japanese Thread, Hand dyed swatch of Indigo Cotton for samples.

Cost: $50 per person

Date: SUNDAY, April 21st // 12-2 pm // at Peel Gallery

POLAROID TRANSFER WORKSHOP WITH LINDSAY METIVIER

POLAROID TRANSFER WORKSHOP

WITH LINDSAY METIVIER

LEARN EMULSION TRANSFER TECHNIQUES USING POLAROID FILM!

Using a Polaroid Lab, attendees will have the opportunity to transform any digital image on their mobile device into physical Polaroids and to use those to make emulsion lifts (aka Polaroid Transfers). Your instructor Lindsay Metivier will provide guidance and tips regarding what types of images and editing techniques lead to the most successful emulsion lifts. Each attendee will leave the workshop with 3-5 of their own unique works.

This non-darkroom workshop focuses on the emulsion transfer technique using Polaroid i-Type Film. A Polaroid transfer image is when the emulsion layer is removed from a sheet of instant film. The thin piece of emulsion is then, in a few steps, transferred onto a different surface. In this class we will be transferring the emulsion onto watercolor paper. The class fee includes up to 3 Polaroids per person. Paper and brushes will be provided for workshop use. The workshop does not require any prior knowledge of image transfer techniques.

Extra Materials will be available for purchase after the workshop.

FEB 18 // SUNDAY // 5-7 PM

Max Capacity - 8

Price - $125

Materials Provided - Polaroid Lab, iType Polaroid Film, a squeegee or brayer, scissors, timer, two clean trays for water, acid-free watercolor, rag, or other heavyweight paper

Materials Required - Mobile device (iPhone preferred), Polaroid App (free in the app store), a selection of images you’re considering for this process. Images (Polaroids or other prints) you’ve made of your own work in the past, we’ll spend time at the beginning of our session sharing work!

FOR ARTIST WANG YIMING

FRIDAY

FEBRUARY 16

6-9 PM

an ongoing project exploring the legacy, burden, and retrospective inspirations of recent decades of contemporary China and their implications for the existence of the artist.  A duality manifests itself as the living conditions of the people gradually improve since the late 1970s whereas a line of forgotten/hidden/erased events and history quietly evolve. Through distant tales, Wikipedia, and indirect underground literature, to know about a comprehensive history of the past (largely through these censored materials) has become itself a defiant behavior to this day in the artist's home country. Departing from a personal collection of archival vernacular photographs purchased in China, the artist incorporated found literature, newspaper articles, and news footage stills to clash with the lives these characters chose to remember through the taking of vernacular photographs: their collective history, recent past, present, and future.

VANISHING/VISIBLE

artwork image: “Warming Skies, Antarctica”, 40” x 60”, Mixed Media

OPENING RECEPTION

FEB 9, FRIDAY

6-9 PM

Narratives of climate change often place the issue as an apocalyptic threat to life on Earth, but the tragedy of the climate crisis is also an opportunity to practice anew radically different ways of living – in better relation with the environment and one another – in the here and now. Vanishing/Visible is a visual arts and poetry collaboration of examination, reflection, and response to the global climate crisis and its ecological impacts. It encourages us to move beyond the existential into the embodied, beyond apathy into empowerment. Its visual and poetic provocations aim to ground abstractions about a dying planet within an awareness of both the natural wonders being lost, and the ways that this loss shows up in our federal, state, and municipal politics around land, labor, food, transportation, and housing.

This exhibition features paintings of vanishing icescapes within the Polar regions by artist Nerys Levy who has worked in both the Arctic and Antarctic. These icescape paintings will be joined by the work of ten youth poets from Orange County who, together with the poet laureate of Carrboro, Liza Wolff-Francis, and with Cortland Gilliam, the poet laureate of Chapel Hill, will respond in poetry to Nerys’s artwork and to the greater significance of climate change for our lasting ecologies. In addition to having their poetic responses exhibited alongside the paintings, the youth poets will return to PEEL to share their work at the February 9, Second Friday reception to lead the community, through poetry and art, recommitting to a more equitible, loving, and livable world.

OFF GRID // "POWER OF PAINTING" LECTURE & CLOSING RECEPTION

Renzo Ortega, CURATOR OF THE OFF-GRID EXHIBITION will discuss the current state of painting

“There are no isms for contemporary painting, much less a technique to follow. I think the

current moment is perfect for painting because its centuries of history, conventions, and

technical innovations generate the ideal canvas for artists to develop pictorial works that

represent our current time and, at the same time, be part of the fascinating history of painting;

which is part of the social and cultural developments of nations and their people.

The Off-Grid exhibition, curated by local painter Renzo Ortega for Peel Gallery, brings

together five artists who live and work in the Triangle, North Carolina area. Whose work

presents a different approach and application of painting, from figuration to non-figuration,

from paint on canvas to site-specific installation. This exhibition represents a diverse range of

pictorial expression, empowering the medium and making the painting practice relevant and

necessary.

These exhibited artworks are a cultural contribution to the region; they demonstrate that

painting is not just making an image with paint but also transmitting personal statements. The

different and unique artistic voices represented in this exhibition, sharing the same space,

also demonstrate that coexistence between diverse people is possible, and that is something

we all want and advocate in the region.”

The participating artists are:

Samuel Bordley
