Copy/Share… is a hand-bound edition of books that features images made using an iPhone 13. Each image has been lifted out of its background using Apple’s auto image selection feature. The algorithm, which is still fairly new, creates unpredictable selections which sometimes include background elements and other times leave out unexpected portions of the image. Representing a particular moment in technological advancement, this sequence of images explores the fragmentation of subjects removed from their context. The subtitle, finding the edges of things, refers not only to the physical edge of the subjects created by the selection tool but also to the constantly shifting edge of photographic possibility created by digital tools. The negative space left by the removal of the background seems to grow larger throughout the book, repeatedly asking what is a subject, what is not a subject, and how do we define the edges of the two?
